Krankheit ist kein Luxus

Solo exhibition and book presentation

KOMM.ST LAB
Hauptplatz 15

Austria

9 Mai to 28 June 2026
Every day from 9 am to 6 pm

Opening: 8 Mai, 6 pm

In the exhibition “Illness Is Not a Luxury”, Matthias Mollner explores the social and existential challenges posed by severe, chronic illnesses such as ME/CFS and Long COVID. Through his photographs, collages, objects and videos, the artist examines the lives of those affected and their carers, and explores why these people often receive little or no support from the medical and social welfare systems.

ME/CFS, post-COVID syndrome and their associated conditions have devastating effects on both the individuals affected and on society. Tens of thousands of people with this condition in Austria alone are subjected to immense suffering, which in some cases can lead to suicide. Mollner’s partner also died in 2024 after several years of being bedridden with ME/CFS and associated conditions.

In the exhibition, the artist approaches the subject from a personal perspective and, through his works, reflects on the strengths of these people in their daily struggle for survival with their illnesses and in their fight against a social system that often acts in an inhumane manner.

As part of the exhibition opening, there will be a presentation of two new publications on ME/CFS and Long COVID. “Fighters in the Crash Zone” by Matthias Mollner portrays 18 sufferers and their carers through photographs and interviews. Monika Pietrzak-Franger’s catalogue “Seemingly Recovered: Living with Long Covid and the Right to Hope” features sufferers who have not regained their health following a Covid infection. The presentation will be followed by a discussion with the audience.

Das unsichtbare Leiden mit ME/CFS

Group exhibition

Landtag Nordrhein-Westfalen
Düsseldorf

28 October to 21 November 2025

In the room installation designed and built by Matthias Mollner, seven artists present works that deal with the realities of life for people with ME/CFS and complex chronic illnesses. Six of the artists are or were themselves affected by ME/CFS and comorbidities and use their art to process their personal struggle for survival and the major health and social problems they face, but also the strengths and creative solutions they have developed in dealing with severe chronic illnesses.

As the partner of Judith Schoßböck, who was seriously ill and died in 2024, Mollner looks at the issue from his own perspective and presents a series of photographs of people affected by the disease.

5 September to 16 November 2025

Human emotions form the starting point for Matthias Mollner’s exhibition ‘Liquid Anthropocene’ at UZ Labor.

A series of 42 photo collages of the same name, created during the Covid pandemic, shows people, animals and machines moving through barren steppe and mountain landscapes – in a world that is constantly under human influence and becoming increasingly complex, where everything seems possible and impossible at the same time, and where experienced reality is linked to perceived or imagined scenarios of threat and salvation.

Frayed nervous systems mix with happiness hormones and fantasies of rage. Vehicles roll through the wasteland, producing clouds of exhaust fumes, horses and millipedes trot and crawl across asphalt roads, pigs ride through cemeteries, giant pathogens float in the air or are pulled across a field by a tractor. People do what they always do – they celebrate, they argue, they have sex, they hang around, they wait for the end or the rise, they indulge in strange rituals and trudge in a row towards an unknown destination.

The Other Life

Performance

31 October, 1 and 2 November 2024, 07:30 pm

ARTIST AT RESORT | TERM 24
Tanz*Hotel | Resort 1020 Studios at Zirkusgasse 35, 1020 Vienna

In his performance, Matthias Mollner deals with the reality of life of chronically seriously ill people who are often invisible or made invisible in society. Based on personal experiences — his partner suffers from a severe form of the multisystem disease ME/CFS — Mollner develops a work that delves into the existential dimension of the topic. The dark sides of life such as suffering, isolation and dying are revealed, as are the strength, dreams and hopes of those affected and their relatives.

Two of these artists are themselves affected by multisystem diseases such as ME/CFS and work with sometimes severe physical limitations, e.g. bedriddenness or severe neurological symptoms.

Further information about our contributions can be found on the Parallel website. There you can also purchase the exhibited works of art directly online.
